This beautiful and historic basilica was the setting of Celine Dion’s 1994 wedding to René Angélil. A fairy tale building with dramatic Gothic Revival architecture and a grand and colourful interior, Notre-Dame is truly stunning.
The stained glass windows depict scenes from Montreal’s religious history instead of traditional religious imagery, and the 1891 Casavant Frères pipe organ with 7,000 individual pipes is a sight to behold.
Notre-Dame was the largest church in North America for over 50 years. Raised to the status of basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1982 and designated a National Historic Site in 1989, it is a beautiful landmark.
A fee of five dollars is charged to visitors to enter the building, unless they are attending mass. The basilica also offers, for a fee, a historical show detailing its history Tuesdays through Saturday in the evening.
